Reflections from the Monaco Yacht Show 2025

This year’s Monaco Yacht Show once again impressed as the pinnacle of inspiration for superyacht afficionados. It was also wonderful to see such a strong Australian presence with a real sense of camaraderie and energy.

Across the docks a trend I noticed was the evolution of superyacht design to reflect a way of living in harmony with the world. Wellness was central to the yachts I saw, with dedicated spa and gym spaces now a must. I enjoyed seeing compact, multifunctional gym equipment – some of it integrated into the floor to maximise head height and allow for full-scale workouts at sea.

Aesthetically, the use of glass and natural light was also important. Reeded and fluted glass, natural marbles, soft veined stones, and warm timber tones created an atmosphere of calm luxury. Likewise, the move away from traditional dark wood finishes towards lighter, more modern materials signals a broader design shift that embraces natural texture, light, and restraint.
Fold out walkways maximised space and created a sense of floating above the water. On board beach clubs were also prevalent – even in smaller superyachts. Biophilic design principles were evident throughout, creating a seamless indoor–outdoor flow that deepened the sense of connection to the ocean
The elevation of nature was mirrored in technological progress, with more zero-emission yachts leading the way toward a more sustainable marine industry.

For me, as a designer, the show reinforced how much design innovation comes from reimagining space especially in environments where every square metre must deliver both beauty and function. That constraint makes innovation a priority and it’s what makes superyacht design so rewarding and constantly evolving.

Back at @The Yard Brisbane, where I’m fortunate to work in a marine hub with such talented superyacht craftsmen, I’m excited to explore enhanced beach club concepts, more refined wellness zones, and design elements that prioritise natural materials, texture, and light in my current projects.
