The Ultimate Crew Guide to Brisbane

Welcome to The Yard Brisbane. We know yard periods demand hard work and long hours, so when you finally get some downtime, we want you to make the most of our beautiful city. Here is your essential guide to local hotspots, transport, and the best of Brisbane.

Brisbane City Skyline and River
The stunning Brisbane River and Central Business District skyline.

Getting Around: Buses & Trains

The Yard Brisbane is located in Hemmant, putting you in a strategic position to access both the relaxed Bayside and the bustling City Center.
  • The Go Card: Before you do anything, purchase a Go Card from a local train station or convenience store. This is your tap-and-go pass for all trains, buses, and ferries in South East Queensland.
  • Trains: Hemmant Railway Station is your local stop, located on the Cleveland Line. Heading westbound will take you directly into the CBD (Central Station, Roma Street, and South Bank) in about 30 minutes. Heading eastbound takes you to the coastal suburbs of Wynnum and Manly.
  • Buses: The Translink bus network is extensive. Local routes can connect you to nearby shopping centers like Cannon Hill or Carindale.
  • Rideshare: Uber and Didi operate heavily in the area and are often the quickest way to hop between the yard and local Bayside pubs.

Keeping Fit: Local Gyms

Need to maintain your fitness routine off the boat? The neighboring suburbs of Tingalpa, Wynnum, and Manly offer excellent facilities just a short drive or train ride away.

Fitness Cartel (Tingalpa)

A massive, full-service gym featuring a large free-weights area, cardio equipment, group fitness classes, and saunas. Great for a comprehensive workout.

F45 Training (Wynnum & Manly)

If you prefer high-intensity, team-training environments, F45 has studios in both Wynnum and Manly. Perfect for burning calories fast before a shift.

Snap Fitness & Anytime Fitness

For those working odd hours in the yard, 24/7 access is available at Snap Fitness (Wynnum) and Anytime Fitness (Tingalpa). Both offer solid, well-maintained equipment.

Things to Do on the Brisbane River

The river is the lifeblood of Brisbane. Since you work on the water, you might as well play on it!

Story Bridge Brisbane
The iconic Story Bridge—you can kayak beneath it or climb over it!
  • Riverlife Adventure Centre: Located at the base of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, they offer twilight kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the river, giving you epic views of the city skyline.
  • Ride the CityCats: Brisbane’s public ferry system (the CityCat) is the most scenic way to travel. Grab your Go Card, jump on at Apollo Road or Murarrie, and ride it all the way to South Bank or the University of Queensland.
  • Story Bridge Adventure Climb: Climb to the top of Brisbane’s most famous bridge for a 360-degree panoramic view of the river and the city.

Going Out: Brisbane Nightlife

When the crew is ready to let their hair down, Brisbane delivers. Here are the main precincts you need to know:

Howard Smith Wharves

Located right under the Story Bridge, this is Brisbane’s premier dining and drinking precinct. Grab a table at Felons Brewing Co. for sunset beers on the lawn, or head to Mr Percival’s for cocktails over the water.

Fortitude Valley (“The Valley”)

The epicenter of Brisbane’s club and live music scene. If you want to dance until 3 AM, this is where you go. Check out rooftop bars like MAYA Mexican or underground clubs and live music venues like The Tivoli.

West End

For a more alternative, laid-back vibe with craft breweries, quirky cocktail bars, and live music, head to West End. The Boundary Hotel and Archive Beer Boutique are crew favorites.
